Generic Brands

With the economy being in a slump, I’m pretty sure there’s been an increase with consumers buying generic brand items.  To buy generic or not buy generic…has always been the question in my head.

I must admit, there are certain items that I do buy “off” brand:

  • bottled water (I actually prefer the Target brand over Dasani)
  • some seasonings – I cook A LOT of random things that call for lots of random, expensive seasonings that I will probably only use 1/8th of a teaspoon and may only use once!
  • milk – I only use milk to cook with…I despise drinking it, so no need to buy name brand
  • rice – not really sure why I buy generic rice…hmmmm

some of my generic seasonings

I recently tried the Whole Foods 365 brand of marinara sauce, which I used to make a very quick chicken parmesan.  It was pretty good, definitely something I would try again.

I do have certain items that I WILL NOT buy generic.  Either because I’ve had a bad experience or simply because I’m a snob with some of my foods:

  • already made break & bake cookies – occasionally, I don’t want to bake homemade cookies, so I buy Nestle Toll-House cookies to bake and I love them!
  • Ketchup – I will never buy anything other than Heinz
  • Salsa – I am forever obsessed with fresh salsa but it has to be Jack’s Special Salsa, no other brand will do
  • Coffee – enough said

So, I say all of this to ask, what do you buy generic?
